The 888SPS was the last of the true essence of Ducati before they globally commercialised to sell a "brand".

The 74 green frame 750ss does it for me, it brings back all those memories-Paul Smart and
Bruno Spaggiari winning at Imola, Hailwood at the Six Hour at Amaroo giving a riding lesson to
all our top riders, then co rider Jim Scaysbrook binning it for a DNF. It was unobtainable to me, but given the hassles my mate had with his more proletarian yellow 750 sport with switchgear,
tuning and riding position it's probably just as well one never graced my shed.

The 1975 or 78 Duc SS was the only Ducati that i was able to ride it was a screamer in more was than that i could ever discribe rough but smooth against a YZ 250 MX, but if only you we had a crystal ball back then. "WOW" PM Green NSW

Having owned a 1974 750GT, 1974 750Sport, 1979 750SS, two 1982 900SS and now a 1983 SD Darmah with 17,000km on the clock I would have to vote for the 1974 750SS. Those round case motors were by far the pick of all the bevel motors and the sound of the Conti pipes, music to the ears.

I have never owned a decent bike; but the reverbrating echo of each piston doing its 'thing' on a 74 750 SS, as it powered up the slope in front of my mates place: AHH it did us all the power of good.

i voted none because my all time favourite is the gt750 of 1972 the one with the fibreglass tank, this is where the vee twin was born, however if for the absolute most desirable exclusive price no option bike then its the apollo v4

While the 74 is arguably more collectable and the grand daddy of all that follow the 916 really recaptured the global performance crown for Ducati like the Fireblade did for Honda before and the R1 for Yamaha after.

Every one of them breathes sex and passion. From the glorious note when under fire to the name itself. Of all the Sports 1000 oozes sex on wheels. Ian @ Robina 4226

In 1988 my Grandfather carked it and left $11,000 to each of his 13 grand kids. If I had been sensible I would have bought a house but instead I plonked it on the counter at a Ducati dealer and rode out on a brand new 750 F1. OK it wasn't a Montjuich but they didn't have one of them. It was my only form of transport, other than a treadly, so it was commuter, tourer and weekend scratcher. On a good day it was better than sex, on a bad day it gave you the shits. Never let me down and I road it in all weather. Drilled out the baffle in the single Conti and it sounded awesome blasting through the tunnels in my home town of Wellington. Rode it in the Kiwi Rider 500 of 1988 but can't remember where I finished.Loved every moment on that bike.

The 851 is the bike that saved Ducatis arse and it was the grandpa of truly great things. The 916 would never have happened if they didn't make the mighty 4 valve 851 first.

I voted for the 900SS simply because i think it looks so elegant. I remember back in '79 when i was first starting high school, some painters were working round the school, and one of them rode a black 900SS everyday and parked it in full view. I used to stand there and just stare at the thing, i thought it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. I've never owned one, but would love to. One day.

We can go into all sorts of reasons why especially the '74 750 was the start of the TRUE Ducati sports bike, but above all- the note! A set of contis pulling off the lights or backing off down the road aaahhhh! It's really why I've owned 5 over the years.

The beginning of the modern day legend, the green frames were a true race bike of the day, later to become the 900SS that most non Ducati people will relate to in conversation. If it wasn't for the 750 there wouldn't be a 916. I have teenage memories of Fraser's in Breakfast Creek Road and the wild metalic paint GTs of the era. We are lucky because of the Dukes of this era still being ridden we can all listen to the beautiful exhaust notes of these bikes.
I still have a 350 Desmo in the shed.

The '75 900cc SS. SO darn smooth, and was still in mph on the speedo. Couldn't understand why the traffic was so slow on Canterbury Road, when I snicked it into 4th, thinking I was only doing 80 kph. It was then I realised I was actually doing 100............. MPH, but the bike was so smooth it felt ridiculously easy!

I look at the 916 now and I see a bike that does exactly what bikes sum up for me. It is physically beautiful, probably out of my league and no doubt expensive to maintain (and also like my wife Italian). That asside, I'm trying to return to bikes for fun and the 916 comes up time after time. When I rode 20 years ago on a 70's Z250, the 916 was the bike of dreams - still is.

You left out the MHR 1000 of 1985 of which there were 50 made at the end. I had one imported into Aus and it was by far the best Ducati i have owned. I picked the 916 SPS as it is art in motion although I bought the S4 as it was comfortable :)

The only Ducati i've ever owned was the 1966 Mach 1,a great bike which actually did the speed of 106mph the factory said it would,Raced it at Pukekohe in production form, also on the beach at Murawai NZ.If only Ducati still made a single cyl motorcycle I'd be at the front of the queue to buy one, wish I still had it.Mel Mulqueen,St.Marys NSW.

The one I would love to have in the shed to ride beside my Metralla MK2 is a 450 single the last one with the disc brake. They are beautiful. If not then a similar age 750S

The 916 series changed motorcycling. Look at one now, they are still the prettiest thing on the road. Hands down, my pick was the 1997 916.
