04 Nov 2009 | What your taxes should have paid for

The Transport Accident Commission in Victoria recently produced an extraordinary anti-motorcycling ad, which has been widely broadcast on television in the name of road safety.

This is our remake of what the ad should have looked like.

In the TAC ad, motorcyclists are portrayed as suicidal idiots who will die.

In ours we offer some simple advice and show you can actually survive a ride on a motorcycle, if you make some responsible decisions.

Which one would you prefer to see your tax money spent on?

Much more sensible. We all need to acknowledge the inherent danger of riding a motorcycle, but I prefer to think most riders are more aware of road danger than the average driver. Well done, MC Trader! Sue

TAC ad is a gross misrepresentation. Anyone who commutes knows it's the bullies and SMIDSYs that are the real danger. There are very few riders out there who are anything but responsible and courteous (to one another, at least) As for for 4WDs and black Krauts, that's another matter.
What's with the new signs on highways extolling the virtues of headlights-on driving in daylight hours? That neutralises bikes' only effective way of being seen if they're hidden in a batch of car lights. That's absolute non-rider stupidity if ever I saw it. Please all write to Tim Pallas and let him know how dangerous that is for bikes. (Maybe that's the point of it - bump up the bike casualty stats to strengthen their case)

Your ad, spot on, we need to promote a positive attitude to riding, not negative ones.
TAC need to change tack.

You're remake is a good training/reminder guide for riders, but not what I would like to see as an ad. I really like the ad they did which made drivers more aware of motorbikes.

Original TAC ad is aimed only at the motorcyclist & anty biker propagander. I'm 46 Y.O, QLD rider, travelled 25,000Ks per year for 30 years, & been crashed into 3 times, & still live the bikers dream. Remake is Very lame & boring, & No mention of how over 70% Car & MC accidents are caused by the motorist at fault, or by drivers not even being programed to see a motorcyclist. Any One 50 k trip on any highway, us bikers put up with F-wits moving imto our lanes, cutting us off, driving too close behind us, when our brakes are far superior to that of a cars, & inatention of drivers who talk on mobiles & texting while driving. My defence has always been to travel faster than trafic & stay way in front of ignorant drivers in cages who have turned on us from negative media. Driving at speed limits gets you boxed in between trucks & other vehicals traveling far too close. Show stuff that matters to us that educates drivers, like how a motorcycle can be agile & out manuvure & out brake a car, the inportance of not travelling up our ass, & promote more every day uses of motorcycles. If everyone who drove a car had a son, daughter, friend or partner who rode, they'd notice every motorcycle. We represent a minority who choose to transport ourselves on a machine that takes up a little more road space than if we lay down & weighs double our weight, compared with a car that weighs more than twenty times that of a human & takes up same road & park space as 4 bikes. Cars make no sense in our modern world. Just look over seas at masive scooter population in cities & thing of total gridlocks if they all drove cars. Steve B Gold Coast QLD

Wow great comments, I agree with combine the two. TAC has the benefit of the last of shock value with the roll and impact, we just don't have the luxury of sliding into the kitty litter. MCT has the common scense approach. At the end of the day there will always be "not me mate". Caksduci Orange NSW

There's no mention in the TAC ad of certain drivers over the age of 65 breaking the law & simply not giving way in traffic. At 42, I've done 250k km on motorcyle's & these people are my greatest concern in suburbia.
