09 Nov 2009 | High-end motor for GS & RT

BMW has slotted a version of the twin-cam boxer engine used in the HP2 series into the wider road range, starting with the 1200GS and Adventure, plus the RT tourer.

The powerplant is understandably in a milder state of tune than for the HP2, but nevertheless provides a significant jump on the single-cam predecessors.

According to the maker: “First, the new engine comes with an increase in maximum torque from 115 to 120 Nm at an unchanged 6000 rpm, for even more pulling force and traction. Second, the range of useful engine speed is now 500 rpm broader, going up all the way to 8500 rpm. The third improvement is a significant increase in torque where it really counts at low and medium engine speeds, with an absolutely smooth and homogeneous torque curve. Maximum output, as before, is 81 kW (110 hp), now at 7750 rpm (previously 7500 rpm).”

Both machines can be ordered with a wide range of electronic wizardry, such as traction control and electronic suspension adjustment. ABS can be had as a switchable item on the GS, and is a standard full-time fitment on the RT.

BMW tells us the RT fairing has come in for a redesign and is now lighter.

Also, the big tourer is fitted with a mouse-like multi-controller, presumably a development of the i-Drive which has been available on many of its cars.

Both machines are expected here in the first quarter of 2010.

Prices have yet to be announced.
